HEALTH AND WELLBEING
So What can You do to Stay Well this Winter?
Get your flu vaccination- if you are in a priority group it's free http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinations/Pages/flu-influenza-vaccine.aspx
At the first sign of a cough or cold, get immediate advice from a pharmacist before it gets worse. http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/winterhealth/Pages/Winterhealthrisks.aspx
Think about any medicines that you or your family may need during the winter months and make sure you have enough. Remember that some pharmacies and surgeries close over the holidays so make sure you pick up your prescriptions in advance.
Keep you and your home warm. Your home should be heated to at least 18°C. If you are worried about your fuel bill you could save money with the Essex Energy Switch www.essex.gov.uk/energyswitch. Food is a vital source of energy and keeps your body warm. Have hot meals and drinks regularly & stock up. Here's how to eat well this winter https://www.livingwellessex.org/health-and-well-being/taking-care-of-yourself/good-nutrition-and-balanced-diet/

Look Out for Other People
Remember that other people such older neighbours, friends and family members, may need a bit of extra help over the winter. There are things you can do to help people who are frail over the winter.
Icy pavements and roads can be very slippery and cold weather can stop people from getting out and about. Keep in touch with your friends, neighbours and family and ask if they need any practical help, or if they’re feeling under the weather.
Make sure they’re stocked up with enough food supplies for a few days, in case they can’t go out. And make sure they get any prescription medicines before Christmas Eve when many GPs and pharmacies will close for the holidays and if bad weather is forecast.
If you do need help over the holiday period when your GP surgery or pharmacy is closed, call NHS 111 and speak to a call adviser who will be able to direct you to a local service that is open. You can also visit NHS Choices at: www.nhs.uk
